Getting Started with Ad Blocking
Our DNS Privacy ad blocking service provides multi-layered protection against ads, trackers, malware, and other unwanted content. Follow these steps to get started with a more private and secure internet experience.
1. Sign Up for an Account
Before you can use our ad blocking service, you’ll need to create an account:
- Visit our signup page
- Enter your email address and choose a strong password
- Verify your email address by clicking the link sent to your inbox
- Log in to access your dashboard
2. Add Your IP Address
For our service to recognize your devices, you need to register your IP address:
- Navigate to the Known IPs section in your dashboard
- Click the Add Current IP button to automatically detect and add your current public IP
- Alternatively, click Add IPv6 if you’re using IPv6 connectivity
- Your registered IP addresses will appear in the list with their reverse DNS information
3. Set Up Automatic IP Updates
Since most home internet connections have dynamic IP addresses that change periodically, it’s important to keep your IP registration current:
- In the Automatic Updates section of your dashboard, copy the unique URL provided
- Set up a scheduled task on a device that’s always on:
- Linux/Mac: Create a cron job to call the URL every 24 hours
- Windows: Create a scheduled task to call the URL every 24 hours
- Router: Some routers allow you to set up periodic HTTP requests
Example cron job for Linux/Mac:
0 0 * * * curl "http://dnsprivacy.org.uk/api/v1/update/YOUR_UNIQUE_TOKEN"
4. Configure Protection Levels
Our service offers multiple levels of protection to suit your needs:
- Navigate to the Protection section in your dashboard
- Enable the Threat Intelligence Feed to block known malicious domains
- Choose your desired protection level:
- None: No protection against ads or trackers
- Low: Basic protection against common ad networks
- Medium: All-around protection against most ad networks and trackers
- High: Extended protection against a wider range of unwanted content
- Extreme: Aggressive protection blocking ads, affiliate links, tracking, metrics, telemetry, and more
- Optionally enable Force Safe Search to enforce safe search on major search engines
- Click Save Changes to apply your settings
5. Configure Your Devices
Once your account is set up and configured, you need to point your devices’ DNS settings to our servers:
- Find the setup guide for your specific device:
- Follow the step-by-step instructions to change your DNS settings
- Test your setup by visiting Verifying your Setup to confirm that your setup is working correctly
